Here’s a great article written by our friends at Photojojo explaining just how to sharpen pictures using the Unsharpen Mask. Contrary to what the name implies, an “unsharp mask” is actually used to sharpen an image. Sharpening can help you emphasize texture and detail, and is critical when post-processing most digital images. Unsharp masks are the most common type of sharpening, and can be performed with nearly any image editing software (such as Photoshop). An unsharp mask does not create additional detail, but it can greatly enhance the appearance of detail by increasing small-scale acutance. Acutance describes how quickly image information transitions at an edge. Thus, high acutance results in sharp transitions and detail with clearly defined borders.
