Although many top photographers have attended college for arts/photography, it has been my experience that most working photographers are basically self taught, with some supplemented course work thrown in. Attending photography seminars is a great way to increase your knowledge base about specific fields, i.e., lighting, portraiture, shooting stock..If attending a collegiate program is out of the question, I recommend shoot, shoot, and shoot some more, read all you can, and seek critical feedback. One field that many photogs overlook and is equally important is the business side. To be successful, you must know how to run a small business, marketing, and how to price your work.
