Envisioning Family: A Photographer’s Guide to Making Meaningful Portraits

meaningful portraits 260x300 Envisioning Family: A Photographers Guide to Making Meaningful Portraits picturesFamily. A small word with powerful meaning. Most of us trace the roots of our own personal identity back, in large part, to our experience as part of a family. The actual definition of what a family is can vary widely. Yet, interestingly, most family photography is anything but varied. We are used to the basic posing of a group brought together and smiling like they never do in real life. We all know that staid family image. It doesn’t offer much impact, and most professional photographers aren’t terribly interested in shooting it.

New York City Photographer Danelle Manthey

subdivisions 1024x391 New York City Photographer Danelle Manthey pictures

Imaginative, colorful, and thought-provoking imagery. New York City Photographer Danelle Manthey pulls from her experience across many photographic disciplines to craft a truly wonderful portfolio.

Danelle Manthey grew up in South Dakota, where at the age of 16 she picked up her first camera.  After attending Chicago’s acclaimed school for photography, Columbia College, she then worked as a color printer, studio manager and photographer.  These experiences helped broaden her sense of how to take a photograph; dealing with various subjects, lighting and production.

In 2003 she embarked on her first large-scale project, Christmas USA, photos of people in her hometown with their Christmas Lights.  She has been working on the project every year since in a new location around the country and is looking to turn both the photographs and the stories of these people into a book.  The images she shot from Christmas USA became her accepted submission piece into chashama’s Artist in Residency Program in New York City where she was granted a subsidized studio space in 2005.  The work created during this time period became a solo show at the chashama gallery on 42nd St. in Manhattan.

In 2008 she was invited to participate in the Pool Art Fair in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City.  Also in 2008 she began work on Isolation, using a young girl mannequin as her muse to create a group of images that are haunting and eerie.

In December of 2010 she had her first solo show of Christmas USA at Jenkins Johnson Gallery in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City and in January 2011 participated in a group show; featuring images from her series Isolation; entitled Girls, Girls, Girls also at Jenkins Johnson Gallery.

In September 2011 she will participate in the Governors Island Art Fair in NYC.  In November 2011 she will be participating in a two-person show at Susan Eley Fine Art in New York City showcasing images from her latest artist residency with chashama (2010); 4×5 portraits.  She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and is constantly working on new projects.

Danelle resides in New York City and Upstate New York.

Story Teller Through Photographs

“There are so many things that I love and am thankful for in my life  -  my husband, rainy days, hot showers, traveling to Costa Rica, flip-flops, vintage stores, hot coffee and amazing friends. I am a wife to a caring and patient husband, a mom to two spoiled pooches, an event planner/professional fundraiser and an avid story-teller through photographs. Working with my husband has given me an outlet to create, connect and to dream.

There is a quote I came across and I feel that it so accurately depicts the stage I’m at in my life and the personal meaning I have for my work:”

‘The urge to create, the urge to photograph comes in part from the deep desire to live with more integrity, to live more in peace with the world and to possibly help others do the same.’ – Wynn Bullock

Projecting Memories – Portrait Photographer Ronald D. Vogel

great examples of portrait photography Projecting Memories Portrait Photographer Ronald D. Vogel pictures

“I am a photographer who has specialized in portrait photography. My aim is to document characters of people without any distraction from the mere face, “ writes portrait photographer Ronald D. Vogel. “The documentary itself is not about the people I shoot. This is actually not feasible and not necessary alike, because most people that view my works can not proof the “real story” behind the model. Thus I leave the viewer with nothing more than a face and a name (which is often a pseudonym). The goal I am aiming at is the “story in the mind of the viewer itself”.

By trying to craft portraits with an expressive and characteristical appearance I try to invoke a certain remembrance in the viewer’s mind. The “characteristical aspect” is actually part of yourself, the viewer, since the pictures intend to project visions of your own coinage onto my work. Or, in other words, I try to project memories of your own onto the screen to make you feel the accompanied vibe (which comes out of your own past).”
