Assignment Chicago – Tribune Photojournalist Alex Garcia

Chicago Tribune Photojournalist Alex Garica

“I have a new photo blog at chicagotribune.com with the name “assignment chicago“. It’s been up for a couple weeks. I share photos, outtakes, stories and Tuesday Tips, a weekly feature on picture-taking.”

To introduce myself, I’m a Chicago photographer with twenty years professional experience, having come to the Chicago Tribune, from the Los Angeles Times.  I’ve also worked at the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the Palm Beach Post. I’ve been to several counties, states, countries and continents on assignment, but the most rewarding usually have been those taken in my local area, since they relate and resonate to my daily life.

About my credentials…I’ve been a fortunate recipient of several awards, including a shared Pulitzer Prize with the staff for coverage of gridlock at O’Hare Airport, a 1st Place from the World Press Photo contest in Amsterdam, and the title of Illinois Photographer of the Year.  I’ve been published in several books, including A Day in the Life of the U.S. Armed Forces, America at Home and America 24/7. I’ve also given workshops on lighting, portraiture, and my documentary work.  I speak to groups frequently about life as a photojournalist or photo tips from a professional photographer.

I plan to update the photo blog at least 3 times a week, MWF -  enough to keep things interesting. On Tuesdays, I’ve started a regular feature called “Tuesday Tips”, where I talk about tips and thoughts about photography/photojournalism

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy the photo blog. Please link to it whenever you get the chance.

Cheers,

Alex Garcia

GlobalFingerprints – Mike Nyffeler

Today, during my regular afternoon catch up session on Twitter I found a reference about our site by last month’s winner Mike Nyffeler. While it is always nice to be mentioned, I like to think that we provide a service for photographers… to meet/catch up with others in the field..read about their stories…get exposed to new techniques and styles…but most importantly, gain motivation from the success of others and aspire to continue to develop our own skills.

GlobalFingerprints from michael nyffeler on Vimeo.
In checking out the kind words from Mike, I cruised through his site to find that, in addition to shooting photographs, he is quite the accomplished videographer. Unlike the majority of  photogs who punch the clock on a daily basis and steal away a few moments a week to work on their craft, Mike is living the dream…traveling the globe..documenting  all that inspires him.

I was so impressed with his recent video, that I had to share it with you. Hope you enjoy! Continued success to Mike.

He has worked as an Official White House Photographer for President Reagan, a freelancer for National Geographic, and as the national photographer for the Chicago Tribune based in their Washington bureau.

Souza’s latest book, “The Rise of Barack Obama,” was published in July 2008 and includes exclusive photographs of the Senator’s rise to power. Souza extensively documented Obama’s first year in the Senate and accompanied Obama to seven countries including Kenya, South Africa and Russia.

In addition to the national political scene, Souza has covered stories around the world. After 9/11, he was among the first journalists to cover the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan after crossing the Hindu Kush mountains by horseback in three feet of snow.”
