Photographers held about 152,000 jobs in 2008. Most of them worked in and around large cities. More than 1 out of 2 were self-employed, a much higher proportion than the average for all occupations.

What is the job outlook for photographers?

Although employment of photographers is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2018, photography is still a highly competitive field. This is because there are more people who want to be photographers than there is employment to support them. Only the most skilled photographers, those with the best business ability and those who have the best reputations, are able to find jobs or attract enough work to support themselves.

I haven’t looked for a photography job in quite some time. However, for some reason I started looking today…just out of curiosity, or course. Surprisingly, I spotted quite a few jobs that didn’t involve malls, babies, senior portraits, or weddings. The photography jobs listed below are real opportunities with a submission deadline. If interested, act fast!

Photographer – TS / SCI / FSP – VA, Chantilly

  • General Dynamics
  • Create finished photographic products, such as photo enhancements and/or enlargements, maps, charts, viewgraphs, slides, and photo CDs.. Provide advice and guidance to less experienced photographers. Maintain and Repair Photographic Equipment
  • Degree in photography or equivalent work experience in areas such as portraiture, still life, location photojournalism, commercial photo lab, and/or digital processing
  • Minimum of 3 years experience and demonstrated proficiency in photography and/or photo processing
