“I fell into photography by accident.  It was a bit of a pratfall if I’m honest, I never really intended to take photography as seriously as I do but I love it so much I’m very rarely found without a camera in hand. It goes without saying then that I am an amateur photographer (some would say very).

I’m based in Belfast in Northern Ireland and that prat fall I speak of happened when I stumbled into a music project in Belfast. The Ohyeah Music Centre was just getting off the ground and as a volunteer it struck me that we needed to document the life of the centre and the kind of people that came through it.  To put it simply, my point and shoot, while a great camera and fun to use, wasn’t cutting it. I upgraded to a Sony DSLR a couple of years ago while on a regular family trip to Toronto (I buy all my gear in Henry’s in Toronto, which is strange) and haven’t looked back.  It has been an incredible journey. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph people who’s skill in their craft far outweighs my own and I’ve been privileged enough to witness things that I never believed I would see, It is an honour to me that through volunteering and now photography, I can call hero’s friends.

While the vast majority of the images on my site are of live show’s it’s become clear to me that I want to get more of life into my work.  I spend a great deal of time trying to get at the details, trying to find a soul in a place or a sound, its these little passing moments that I try to capture.  The vast majority of pictures I take come straight from the camera, there is no photoshopping involved as I genuinely have no idea how the monstrous thing works and I believe that if you try to edit a picture too much it quickly becomes a work of fiction.

Occasionally I’ll mess about with contrast and maybe crop something down or out (depending on who it is…) that’s it.

What you see is what you get, or what I got.”

Iced-Coffee from Northern Ireland – Phil O’Kane

iced coffee2 Iced Coffee from Northern Ireland Phil OKane picturesWelcome to the newest member of our photographic community, Iced-Coffee Photography blog from Northern Ireland.

Name- Phil O’Kane
Residence – Belfast, Northern Ireland

As it says above, I’m Phil. I take a lot of photographs, as one of my many obsessions, that and music and the internet and until recently, hating macs. I dream about packing a bag or two and traveling the world. Along with dreams of lying on a beach for a long time – I did that last summer, however, and it wasn’t much fun. It was too hot so I took photographs of the sand, the sea, the sky and an old couple – then I burnt my feet.
