LENS – Photography, Video and Visual Journalism

No morning would be complete without a visit to LENS at the NYTimes….and yes, I do feature this site quite often. Tremendous work by incredible photographers. This is a definite bookmark for any aspiring photojournalist!

The World As I See It – Gene Lowinger

“Until I discovered photography, music was the overriding passion of my life. I and David Grisman formed the New York Ramblers, which won the band competition at Union Grove, North Carolina in 1964. In 1965 I went to Nashville to play with Bill Monroe on the Grand Ole Opry. After my internship with him I returned to New York to pursue my violin studies with the world famous violin pedagogue Raphael Bronstein. I studied photography at the New School and as a documentary photographer worked in Europe, the Middle East, and Russia. I currently teach music and photography at my home in New Jersey, and play violin in local New Jersey orchestras…”

NYC Photoblog by Drew Shannon

“My name is Drew Shannon, and I’m part-New Yorker, part-music geek, part-video game nerd, part-beginner-photographer, part-marketer, and part-lots-of-things. To help pay the bills, I work as an Associate Media Planner at Mindshare.”

“My background is that I took a beginner’s photography class a few years ago in high school, but after graduating, my camera just sat in the closet collecting dust. After moving to New York City about 2 years ago, I picked my camera back up again, and recently got my first DSLR. Since then, I’ve just been interested in taking as many photos as possible, and trying to learn as much along the way as I can.

I’m currently working on a 365 Project, posting a new photo on my blog every single day, and I’ve found that it’s a great way to keep me interested and motivated, all while honing my skills and helping me learn my way around my camera. I don’t have a personal style per se, but am hoping that by posting my photos online online for people to see, I’ll start learning what my strengths are. More than that, I’m just having a lot of fun with this re-discovered hobby of mine!”

Metrocake |NYC street photography by Roe Bianculli

My name is Roe.  I feature shots from New York City and the general tri-state area, but also slip in shots from other countries that I’ve visited. I’ve been writing on the Web since 1999. The shot above is me, at the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles, around 2007 — the night after I got engaged! Here’s where I’ve been:

  • metrocake.com: 1999-2004. Started a few days after I got engaged to be married for the first time, it noted many major events in my life: planning for our wedding, our wedding day, the death of my father, and the deaths of my grandparents. In 2003, it also announced my separation from my husband.(Those archives are no longer available. I’m a different person, married to a different person, and while some of the entries were hilarious, many were pretty painful. The funny ones may make their way back someday…but fresh starts are good.)
  • ultramegawow.com: 2004-2006. Life in Astoria, Queens — adjusting to dating and divorce.
  • metrocake.com: 2006+. New life part two (three?). Living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with my boyfriend … husband-to-be … husband. Geekery abounds!
