A Life In the City – NYC Photography Blog

“Hello!  My name is Charley Quinlivan and I live in New York City.  I have just started a photo blog as a way for me to post what I like about New York.

I have been shooting for about two years now but the blog is only about a month old.  I usually shoot every day but I try and hold my posts to the best of the shots.  I am drawn to shoot people mainly…not so much in the classic “street photography” tradition although I am inspired by that genre.  I often look for the person alone in this busy place.

Sometimes I ask for a picture and I am always surprised by how many people agree to have their picture taken by a stranger on the street.  Sometimes I just shoot, it depends on my mood and the situation.  I enjoy looking through the ilovephotoblogs site, I have found a lot of inspiration from looking at what others are doing.

Thanks!”

New York City Photographer Danelle Manthey

Imaginative, colorful, and thought-provoking imagery. New York City Photographer Danelle Manthey pulls from her experience across many photographic disciplines to craft a truly wonderful portfolio.

Danelle Manthey grew up in South Dakota, where at the age of 16 she picked up her first camera.  After attending Chicago’s acclaimed school for photography, Columbia College, she then worked as a color printer, studio manager and photographer.  These experiences helped broaden her sense of how to take a photograph; dealing with various subjects, lighting and production.

In 2003 she embarked on her first large-scale project, Christmas USA, photos of people in her hometown with their Christmas Lights.  She has been working on the project every year since in a new location around the country and is looking to turn both the photographs and the stories of these people into a book.  The images she shot from Christmas USA became her accepted submission piece into chashama’s Artist in Residency Program in New York City where she was granted a subsidized studio space in 2005.  The work created during this time period became a solo show at the chashama gallery on 42nd St. in Manhattan.

In 2008 she was invited to participate in the Pool Art Fair in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City.  Also in 2008 she began work on Isolation, using a young girl mannequin as her muse to create a group of images that are haunting and eerie.

In December of 2010 she had her first solo show of Christmas USA at Jenkins Johnson Gallery in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City and in January 2011 participated in a group show; featuring images from her series Isolation; entitled Girls, Girls, Girls also at Jenkins Johnson Gallery.

In September 2011 she will participate in the Governors Island Art Fair in NYC.  In November 2011 she will be participating in a two-person show at Susan Eley Fine Art in New York City showcasing images from her latest artist residency with chashama (2010); 4×5 portraits.  She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and is constantly working on new projects.

Danelle resides in New York City and Upstate New York.

The Streets of New York City

“This NYC-based photo blog will concentrate on photographic technique illustrated by various shots I’ve taken throughout the years. My philosophy is that great photography skills should not be some sort of trade secret that photographers keep to themselves. My role is to help you take better shots. Mind you, I am no professional, but I have spent a good amount of time on this as a hobby.” …Andrew Halpren

New York Pics – Photography by Rufus Mangrove

“When I have my camera with me, I notice the world is full of interesting people and things.  It makes me appreciate the world a little more instead of focusing on where I am supposed to be and when. Maybe everyone should walk around with a camera.  Maybe there’ll be less war.  Or maybe there will just be more people walking around aimlessly looking for a picture to take.

I’m been photographing the streets and subways of New York City and elsewhere for the last few years. I’m not wedded to any particular camera or lens but I really love my rangefinder and my Ricoh GRD-III.  The majority of my pictures focus on Brooklyn, and in particular, Flatbush Avenue.  It’s the main bloodline of Brooklyn, full of interesting character and diversity.”

The Creative Works of New York City Photographer Steffen Knudsen Allen

Steffen Knudsen Allen developed an interest in photography at a young age and was soon put in charge of the family camera. Much later his photographic education spanned two continents and three schools (including a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design). Steffen currently holds down a job just outside New York City as head photographer in a design studio with multiple international clients, and does anything on the side that he can get his paws into. His images can be seen in over a million homes around the world– on the sides of Macalren baby stroller packing boxes.
