“Growing up on Long Island (Bethpage), NY – I felt lost in my late teens. Worried about my future direction in life, my father gave me an old Argus rangefinder to fool around with. Little did he realize what an important gesture that would turn out to be for me.

After doing some research and seeing the images of Minor White and Ansel Adams I quickly became addicted to photography.

To make a long story short, I left home at 21, quitting my job, leaving my friends and family to see the American Southwest for myself. In California I eventually met my wife, and together we had 3 children, and created our own design studio – and the tasks of running a business and raising a family took a priority to Photography. During that time I stopped taking pictures.

Years later, in early 2005, inspired by my wife, children and friends – I again picked up my cameras. Today I see myself on a passionate mission to make up for years of lost time – creating images that help evoke how I see our wonderful planet.”…

Photographer Interview Series – NYC Street Photographer Markus Hartel

This post marks the third installment of our Photographer Interview Series and features one of my favorite New York City street photographers, Markus Hartel. Taking time out of his busy schedule for a little Q&A, Markus sits down with us to discuss street photography in the Big Apple.

Back in June, I commented about the desire to publish a series of photographer interviews from around the world. This series is open to all photographers, both amateur or professional, who have a story to tell. I love reading about other photographers; what they do, how they got started, their challenges as well as accomplishments. I hope you enjoy the series and if you would like to participate, simply contact me. I’d love to hear for you!

What makes you photograph strangers in the streets of New York City?

I always had an interest in photography, but when I moved here in 2003, I immediately noticed little slices of life happening around me and picked up a camera. Eventually street photography became my passion and I didn’t stop yet.

Do you have any tips on shooting people in the streets without feeling like a creep?

Sure thing – anything is fair game to get photographed in public places, including people (in the US at least). To get the creepiness out of the equation, be open about what you do, don’t sneak up on people and make your camera visible before shooting.

Does it upset you when people compare your work to other photographers?

No, this does not upset me in the least, as I feel that my work is pretty unique… this is also a reason, why I share tutorials – it gives other photographers a chance to get the technique right, but they would never take the same photo.

Do you ever get tired of doing street photography?

I wish I had more time for street shooting, next to a day job and editing, but one can not be creative 24/7 and a street photographer deserves a break every once in a while – it’s always a good thing to refresh your batteries and look at things from a new angle.

If you could choose one camera and one lens to work with for the rest of your life, what would they be?

If I had to chose from the equipment I own right now, it would be the Leica M8 with a 21mm (28mm FOV) lens. On the other hand, if I had a chance to chose new gear, it certainly would be a full frame Leica M9 with a fast 28mm lens. The gear doesn’t necessarily make a difference, but I love the Leica for its simplicity.

Nicolai Morrisson grew up in upstate New York and in Denmark. As a child, he enjoyed taking stuff apart, talking to himself in different accents, breakdancing, apprenticing in a family restaurant kitchen, and taking pictures of everyday objects like drinking straws and winches.

Never having had much regard for arbitrary rules, he was drawn to punk rock and geek culture, where the strong “think for yourself”, “question everything”, DIY, and freedom of knowledge and information ethics matched his own. His professional life has been a bit art-meets-science, having functioned as a user experience and graphic designer for print and the Web, computer programmer and systems architect, audio engineer, composer, classically-trained pastry chef (the ones who make desserts), and founder of a graphic design/music recording studio and a dot com.

He isn’t convinced that this culture we’ve got going is such a hot idea, but he’s having a good time documenting various parts of it with photon detectors of all kinds, whoring himself out to any imaging device—and anything that can be made into one—that crosses his path.

In addition to photography, he enjoys making and eating ice cream, throat singing, amateur theoretical physics, bacon, and things that are plaid. He dislikes bios and finds writing about himself in the third person a bit creepy.

Time is transient, it is fleeting. We experience it, use it, abuse it, even fear it, but my concern here are sequences of events as I witness them and manage to collect them through the lens. Though I will attempt to guide the attention and with it a state of mind and emotion, each of you will experience these slices and fractions of frozen moments as differently as your personality and individuality allows. It is not a philosophical exploration about time; no, it’s about my personal visual voyage towards a collection of short-lived simulacra of occurrences worth their weight in words the mind and heart can only perceive.

The obsession with capturing moments to visualize later or share with others doesn’t just say a lot about who we are as persons, but also describes something about the human condition that has enamored my thoughts and imagination. Through photographic imagery we create transcendence communicating moments and events to future generations and more. Not surprisingly, I discover humanity’s obsession with eternity, the need to keep the present going and to relive it. There is something else, more striking: a ceaseless exercise of awareness, a pursuit for truths and lessons in the details we encounter from day to day.

I was born and raised in Westchester County, New York and currently live in Mexico City.

My camera gear includes an old –but hefty– Nikon D200, and Canon G9 for backup –never leave home without it….
