“I came up with SOTM by accident – during an e-mail exchange with a friend at work in November 2006, she wrote me a reply, which I read, and then suddenly had a vision of her holding a board, upon which was written part of her message.

It was so strong an image that I can still see it now. But then, about two seconds later, I thought that, rather than having her own words displayed in such a manner, it would be more interesting to have her write down something that someone had told her. I don’t know why, but it seemed like a cool idea.”

“We are all shaped by the things that someone once told us. The words we hear impact on us, whether we want them to or not, and it’s undeniable that they have a power.

Someone Once Told Me is essentially a means for me to practise my photography and to give me something to do on my days off as I wander around London, which always feels full of possibilities.

But SOTM is also an attempt to gather and chronicle some of the things that people have heard in their lives, the messages and expressions that have stuck in people’s head, for reasons both obvious and odd.”

“I grew up obsessing over fashion magazines, wanting to look like a different person,” she says. “There’s always this longing in young women to be somebody else.”

While in high school, Postle began taking pictures of herself to work through body issues she was having. Then she started taking pictures of her friends. “To make them feel better about themselves, prettier,” she explains. “To give them a way to see themselves through my eyes.”

Helping people feel comfortable in front of the camera comes naturally to Postle. “It’s one of my gifts as a photographer,” she says. “I love connecting with people. I love making people who don’t think they’d be great on camera, feel great on camera. I love it when I photograph a ‘real’ person, a non-model who thinks, ‘Oh, God, no! I look horrible in front of the camera.’ Because there’s something about putting on fake eyelashes and being made up for the day, being doted on, and dressed in different clothes that helps people feel very special.”

It was from this “therapy” that her signature style was born — a style Postle describes as both literal and fantasy. “It’s about fashion, beauty, sexuality, and strength,” she says. On her website, she refers to the reaction of the waitress, model, or housewife when she sees herself as something different. “It’s about the natural beauty that can exist without starvation or conforming to the status. 20 Awesome Photography Blogs – Bangalore Karnataka India

Welcome photo blog lovers to the 23nd installment of “20 Awesome Photography Blogs”, where we highlight some of the most interesting photo blogs and talented photographers from great cities around the world. From our last stop in Edinburgh, Scotland, we head to picturesque Bangalore, Karnataka, India.

It’s been almost a month since our last feature to the most popular photo blog series currently running. Due to other projects I’ve recently been involved with, time has been in short supply. Going forward, my goal is to continue this series through at least the first half of 2009. I have other photography projects planned for the year, but due to the great response I’ve received from “20 Awesome Photography Blogs”, I see no reason to end any time soon.

Since our first “Awesome” installment, the RSS feeds and email subscriptions have soared with each new posting. I can’t begin to thank everyone enough for promoting our project by linking to each installment and helping to spread the word! All Digg and StumbleUpon love is greatly appreciated and highly encouraged!..(shameless self-promotion, I know). It’s a wonderful compliment to see all the different types of links we gathered along the way…Cara Moulds Photography…Justin Korn Photography…My Manila Photo Blog….Shawn’s Bits…Pete Springer Photography…Andi Pantz Photography Blog…just to name a few.

As I’ve stated in previous postings, this list is compiled in no particular order. First, I compile a list of 30-40 (sometimes more) region specific photo blogs…then go through the process of reading each photographer bio to ensure they have significant ties to the selected area and finally, whittle the blogs down to 20.

For this installment, I have relied heavily on Flickr…which had an usually high number of excellent Bangalore photoblogs. Please understand there were many, many great photographers…but we only have room for 20 per installment. However, if you have a favorite photo blog you’d like to share or perhaps would like our viewers to be made aware of your fine photography blog, by all means talk it up in the comments section below!

Going Global – Translate your photo blog

tn96 Going Global Translate your photo blog picturesRecently started a new initiative to grow my photo blog viewership by commenting on photography blogs in other countries. My main issue has always been overcoming the language barrier….but, not anymore. Thanks to the Google Translate app, I can now quickly copy content from a foreign language blog, paste into the translate tool, select the origin of the original language and what it is to be converted to and presto…content is translated into my language of choice…To post I simply reverse the process..Let out world, here I come!
