Lighthouses are one of the most photographed landmarks in the world. Not sure what the attraction is, but count myself as a lighthouse photo lover as well. Perhaps, its our natural instinct to be drawn to water. Maybe it’s the brilliant colors of lighthouses, set against the blue sky or setting sun, or the contrast of the vulnerable structure versus the power of the sea. But for whatever reason, lighthouse photography will be with us until they disappear.

One of my all-time favorite lighthouse photos, taken in La Jument, France by photographer Jean Guichard, features the powerful sea wrapping around the lighthouse as the keeper stands in the doorway. Incredible image! It would be interesting to know the number of people that have either purchased this image, a calender containing, or were just familiar with it!

Jean Guichard is but one of the many successful photographers that has been able to develop quite a following with their images of lighthouses as well. While researching lighthouse photographers for this article, I was amazed at a) number of photographers specializing in the lighthouse niche, and b) the quality of their photographs.
