I’ve been a professional photographer for over 30 years. The first 15, working in a newspaper and later in an advertising studio shooting company reports, brochures and above-the-line advertising. Following that I co-directed Slidefile, a stock photo agency, where apart from the usual managerial duties, I liaised with photographers and edited thousands of their images in my role as picture editor. During those years I continued to shoot a substantial amount of stock photography for the agency – when I was let out – for use in calendars, magazines and books.

I established a specialist Irish agency, but sold it a couple of years ago after coming to the conclusion that a small, one-person agency was no longer viable in an age of on-line stock. However, as part of the deal, the sale included my entire photographic archive up to 2007. It’s taken a little while to build up my new archive.

I have been running residential photographic workshops for novice and advanced photographers on the Copper Coast in Ireland’s County Waterford; working on assignment for a few clients; and shooting stock imagery which that I’m selling through international agencies…

My interest in photography can be traced back about 14 years to a family outing to Gougane Barra in Co. Cork to mark my brother’s First Communion. As far as I can recall the camera in my possession that day was a well-used Pentax SLR (film of course!).

Since then I’ve rarely been far from a camera, and having owned my fair share of point-and-shoot cameras, first film and then digital, I eventually returned to the SLR with a Nikon D50 that took some of the shots you see on these pages.

I now shoot with a professional grade Nikon D300, complete with hiqh quality f/2.8 lenses ideally suited to my main areas of interest – wedding photography and portraiture, and when possible I also enjoy shooting sports. Meanwhile, my habit of always bringing a camera on my travels regularly presents some good opportunities to shoot landscapes….ronan palliser photography

London Photographer Hugh O’Malley | Beauty and Fashion

06 London Photographer Hugh OMalley | Beauty and Fashion picturesFashion photographer Hugh O’ Malley has quickly developed a tremendous following in beauty photography circles. His career path change from the world of IT to fashion photography has proven to be a wise one…“Originally from Ireland, I’ve been working in the UK for a number of years now and I am based in Hackney, London where I run my studio. My career began in IT – specifically as an engineer working on graphics and games software – and while on a break, traveling throughout Asia for a few months, I became engrossed in photography and decided to return to university to study photography within a fine art context. A few years later, I graduated from Chelsea College of Art and gravitated towards fashion photography, spending another couple of years working as an assistant and in studios throughout London before deciding to start out on my own.”
