Street Photography Blog | Pittsburgh | 1259pm.com

About 1259pm.com12:59 p.m. The final minute of the lunch hour. Most nine-to-fivers are heading obediently back to the workplace, after having spent their lunch hour… well, eating lunch. I’m also heading back to the office, but have probably just gotten Wendy’s chili to go after spending my lunch hour doing other things.
This photo blog is an outlet for me to share photographs I’ve taken prowling the streets of downtown Pittsburgh during my lunch hour. You’ll see a lot of ill-conceived street photography, but also architecture, cityscapes, urban decay, abstractions, and whatever else strikes me. Of course, I take pictures at other times and in other places, so look for those here too. But as long as I have other things competing for my time, the convenience of lunchtime photography will remain a reality, and the resultant shots a recurring theme here.
I’ll make updates every few days or so; naturally they’ll appear at 12:59 p.m.

Photographer Interview Series – NYC Street Photographer Markus Hartel
This post marks the third installment of our Photographer Interview Series and features one of my favorite New York City street photographers, Markus Hartel. Taking time out of his busy schedule for a little Q&A, Markus sits down with us to discuss street photography in the Big Apple.
Back in June, I commented about the desire to publish a series of photographer interviews from around the world. This series is open to all photographers, both amateur or professional, who have a story to tell. I love reading about other photographers; what they do, how they got started, their challenges as well as accomplishments. I hope you enjoy the series and if you would like to participate, simply contact me. I’d love to hear for you!

What makes you photograph strangers in the streets of New York City?
I always had an interest in photography, but when I moved here in 2003, I immediately noticed little slices of life happening around me and picked up a camera. Eventually street photography became my passion and I didn’t stop yet.
Do you have any tips on shooting people in the streets without feeling like a creep?
Sure thing – anything is fair game to get photographed in public places, including people (in the US at least). To get the creepiness out of the equation, be open about what you do, don’t sneak up on people and make your camera visible before shooting.
Does it upset you when people compare your work to other photographers?
No, this does not upset me in the least, as I feel that my work is pretty unique… this is also a reason, why I share tutorials – it gives other photographers a chance to get the technique right, but they would never take the same photo.

Do you ever get tired of doing street photography?
I wish I had more time for street shooting, next to a day job and editing, but one can not be creative 24/7 and a street photographer deserves a break every once in a while – it’s always a good thing to refresh your batteries and look at things from a new angle.
If you could choose one camera and one lens to work with for the rest of your life, what would they be?
If I had to chose from the equipment I own right now, it would be the Leica M8 with a 21mm (28mm FOV) lens. On the other hand, if I had a chance to chose new gear, it certainly would be a full frame Leica M9 with a fast 28mm lens. The gear doesn’t necessarily make a difference, but I love the Leica for its simplicity.

Street Photography Blog | Work Hard and Starve

Hello, and welcome to my “photoblog” or “photographic web log”. i’ve always enjoyed taking Photo’s, ever since i bought my first digital camera (Canon A60 Powershot).
Last year i was given a Kodak EasyShare ZD710 that really got me interested in photography and in other photographers work as well,
Which then led me into buying my current Camera the Nikon D60,my interests tend to lie with street photography, buildings, urban and nature shots.Personally like the pictures I’m posting here, which doesn’t mean that you will. So I’ll leave it to you to decide and would be happy about every single comment, either positive or negative. I know I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m having fun getting there.

All I’ve Seen | Richard Friedman
This website is an on-going, nearly daily, personal project to display a random selection of some of my 8000+ pictures taken since I started taking pictures, which was sometime around 1964. Rather than have these images rot under my desk, I thought it would be interesting to make them available. (More about my slide collection.)
Some of my images have turned up in interesting places: on record jackets, books, funeral memorials, even documentary films made for TV, and off-Broadway stage productions.
Some of the rules I set for myself for doing this project require that I spend no more than 10 minutes working the orignal scanned slide in Photoshop. The only adjustments I permit myself are some simple color balancing (many of the slides come out of the scanner too blue), brightness and contrast adjustments, and some sharpening. Some of the images are cropped, but most are full image.
I do not distort the images. In fact, I really dislike seeing images that are intentionally distorted for some artistic effect. I’d prefer to leave that to painting. What I want to see in a photo is a realistic image, but one that draws attention to things that otherwise might escape our view.
Of course, you will notice that many of these images were taken in Europe, or other interesting places. It seems that the times I am most actively taking pictures are when I’m on a trip or on vacation. I took my first trip to Europe (Ireland/Scotland/England, actually) in 1966. I was 22 years old, and I had a new Nikkormat camera. Being outside New York CIty and out of the US for the first time really managed to open my eyes. In the 1970’s I managed to spend two years living in working in London, and took trips to the continent and north to Scotland. And I took many pictures during that period.
I started shooting digital around 2003, and I like the immediacy of the medium, but I don’t think I’ve given up on film yet. Digital photography is very seductive .. it’s so easy to shoot, and cheaper than film. I still have my film Nikons, and plan to use them. But starting in 2007, more and more recent digital images start appearing on this blog. Now it’s a mix of past, current, and future.
If you were to ask me what interests me the most when taking pictures, I’d have to say that it seems that what I’m trying to photograph is stillness and a sense of place and position….all i’ve seen by richard friedman

London Shop Fronts
London Shop Fronts by Emily Webber. Love the simplicity of the subject matter; the colors, design, and contrast are exceptional. Great example of exploiting a niche. Pick a subject and blow it out!..Well done, Emily.
