Musings in Monochrome – Highton Ridley – Plymouth-Devon-UK

walking the dogs Musings in Monochrome Highton Ridley Plymouth Devon UK picturesMusings in Monochrome discusses black and white photography, posts great example images and describes processing in the introspective.” I just received this photo blog today and have really enjoyed reading the posts as well as viewing the numerous images. The b/w photography is excellent! Many photoblogs without accompanying copy fail to keep my attention, due to the sheer volume of quality images online. Highton does a great job of intertwining great imagery with informative how-to techniques. Check this one out!

Eighteen Percent Grey

eighteen percent grey Eighteen Percent Grey picturesAs a former darkroom rat, I am definitely partial to anyone still keeping ol’ school photography alive. Eighteen Percent Grey is an excellent photoblog featuring black and white photography shot on film. This portfolio primarily focuses on inanimate subject matter. The tonal range of the images is quite impressive, and I like the fact the photographer experiments with a variety of camera formats.

“…Outside the office, I spend much of my time both studying and practicing traditional “analog” photography. In other words, I shoot film. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no luddite — far from it. I just spend enough time staring at a computer screen as it is, and the tangibility of the silver process appeals to me greatly. Its tactile, hands-on, and fun as hell. I love the anticipation of waiting to see what will come out of the fix — the entire process is actually rather cathartic. It helps me unwind.”

“I mainly shoot in 6×6 (Yashica Mat 124G, Holga) or 6×7 and 4×5 (Chamonix 045n-1, Super Speed Graphic). I don’t plan on getting much more specific than that with each image, at least not regularly. This time around I’m deliberately avoiding much focus on gear, as I find it tends to distract from both the process and the image itself. If you’re really curious, feel free to check out this list at my old photoblog for the full compliment. In the darkroom, I’m a Rodinal junkie for the most part — although I’ll also use HC110 or PMK Pyro when the mood strikes.”

Chesapeake Bay Watershed – Photographer Bill Emory

cf0917 god loves sign n0736 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Photographer Bill Emory picturesJust received an interesting photoblog submission this morning…. featuring black and white photography by Bill Emory; the  outlying areas of the Chesapeake Bay. Love it! I may be just a little biased…living only a mile or two from the Chesapeake Bay myself. The use of black and white effectively drives home the Americana feel in these images. Love the small town vibe…the hunting dogs, old churches, front porch gatherings, etc. Another big plus…the photoblog is updated regularly and contains a large archive…Check it out!

Someone Once Told Me – Mario Cacciottolo

sotm Someone Once Told Me Mario Cacciottolo picturesSomeone Once Told Me is an unique, humorous, thought provoking, but also interesting photo blog /social commentary by photographer Mario Cacciottolo, who writes…

“I came up with SOTM by accident – during an e-mail exchange with a friend at work in November 2006, she wrote me a reply, which I read, and then suddenly had a vision of her holding a board, upon which was written part of her message.

It was so strong an image that I can still see it now. But then, about two seconds later, I thought that, rather than having her own words displayed in such a manner, it would be more interesting to have her write down something that someone had told her. I don’t know why, but it seemed like a cool idea.”

We are all shaped by the things that someone once told us. The words we hear impact on us, whether we want them to or not, and it’s undeniable that they have a power.

Someone Once Told Me is essentially a means for me to practise my photography and to give me something to do on my days off as I wander around London, which always feels full of possibilities.

But SOTM is also an attempt to gather and chronicle some of the things that people have heard in their lives, the messages and expressions that have stuck in people’s head, for reasons both obvious and odd.”

Light-Opinion | Rome Italy Photoblog

20080514000852 sziget girls 300x199 Light Opinion | Rome Italy Photoblog picturesGreat photography blog, Light-Opinion, based in Rome, Italy. Awesome collection of color and black and white photographs. I was particularly impressed with the wide variety of imagery this photographer produces. The landscapes are well composed with a unique perspective, no postcard feel here. The portraits display an unique blend of journalistic and editorial style…and a great eye for character studies. While color and black & white images are presented, the color is only used where color is needed to make the image..I’ve always had a soft spot for b & w photography, and Light-Opinion is spot-on with tonal range..black blacks, white whites, detail in shadows, and proper contrast control.

Here is a brief excerpt from the photographer’s bio…“Born in 1976, somewhere in Italy, at dinner time (more or less). I’m currently living in Rome. My first camera was a twenty-year old (and more than 1kg-heavy) Miranda and I do still prefer b/w photos printed on high-contrast paper so, please, don’t ask me why I’ve set up a photoblog.I hope someone will be so kind to explain me what “light opinion” means. Meantime I’ll try to show you which my light opinion is”…”I’d like to upload a new shot everyday, but I already know that I won’t be able to keep this promise. I’ll try to be patient with myself, anyway.”

ian sanderson photography blog Ian Sanderson Photography | Classical Beauty picturesBeautiful collection of portrait, advertisting, and corporate photos by photographer Ian Sanderson. As a photographer, Ian’s work uses shallow depth of field and simple backdrops in much of his work, letting the beauty of the model dominate each image.
