Posing techniques for models and photographers, is what separates the amateur from professional. Natural beauty is worthless unless it can be properly portrayed in print. Listed below are several resources for improving your posing techniques.
Models Posing Guide
“In modeling and photography, asymmetry is a good thing.
“Asymmetry is a good thing in photography because symmetry tends be boring. Don’t ask me why, but more times than not, it’s just not preferable. And remember that for every rule in this world, there are exceptions. So how does this translate to posing? If one hand is on your hip, the other probably shouldn’t be, at least at the same height. If one hand is hanging down to your side, find something else to do with the other one. If your right hand is holding your right lapel at one height and you simply MUST hold the left lapel with the left hand, just make sure that both hands are at different heights. No big deal. It just gives the viewer something a little more interesting to look at. That’s what most of these dos and don’t are all about, making things more interesting and flattering to look at. Stand in front of the mirror. Try dropping one shoulder just a bit. Tilt your head to the side a little,. You’ll see. Just don’t show your mommy. She’ll think you’re weird.” >>>read more
The 1-2-3 Posing Technique
“This technique is used mostly on younger females and will add that “extra touch” to your images to raise them above what the other guy is doing. A brief description is in order however.
The 1-2-3 posing technique is where the body is turned 45 degrees away from the camera and also away from the main light source, then the face is turned back beyond the camera position additional 20 degrees or so then the eyes are brought back to the camera position. The main light is always cross lighting the female form in this technique and will draw a pleasing short light pattern on the face.” This is rather wordy so I will attach several images to show the technique. This technique can be used for head shots, waist up, 3/4 length or full length poses when seated or when standing.”>>>read more
Model Posing Techniques – Arms
“The model’s arms should receive adequate attention when posing because poorly posed arms can wreck an otherwise great shot.
When posing arms, you need to pay close attention to not only how they are positioned, but how they look in the shot. Sometimes the model posing may have no clue how to position her arms, and the frames of the shot offer a limited posing area.
While this may sound difficult, in reality it isn’t. I can be a challenge, but..>>>read more
Model Posing Techniques: Foot Posing
“…this lends an air of femininity and sophistication. It is considered a very elegant foot pose, particularly when the cocked foot is placed slightly in front of the other foot. The heel of the forward foot is placed at the arch of the rear foot with the toes of the rear foot turned slightly out. This is a very basic foot pose. When the right foot leads, it is sometimes referred to as a “right hemisphere,” whereas when the left foot leads it is called a “left hemisphere.” The pose can also be modified by sliding the front foot to the front or side a few inches.”>>>read more
Glamour Modeling Techniques
“If the model is full face, shoulders squared to the lens, try turning her 45 degrees to the left or right. From there, you can direct her to perform a series of head turns and tilts, lifting her chin or dropping her chin, tilting her head to one side or the other. You can rotate her further so that her shoulders are perpendicular to the camera and do the same tilts, chin drops and chin lifts.” >>>read more
Welcome to the world of beauty and fashion photography by Michael McCabe. This photography site was submitted by one of our viewers, and thank you for sharing! What really stands out about Michael’s fashion photography is his command of lighting and a sense of ease each model portrays in the images. The lighting has a very natural feel, no overblown strobes, but rather a simple bump of fill to minimize shadows and contrast, and to supplement the available light. Creating striking images of beautiful women is easier said than done…well done, Michael!
Here is a excerpt from his biography:
Michael was born in Woodstock, New York in 1969. After graduating from university, Michael married his beautiful wife Melissa. They then escaped the “real world” and moved to Aspen, Colorado. Anyone who has spent time there knows this is an amazing place to live. Beauty is everywhere. It was in Aspen, that Michael began his career as a photographer. Today when he’s not on location, he spends his time in New York and Miami.
Natural locations and lighting are central to Michael’s photography. “There is so much beauty around us every day. We just need to learn to stop and see what is right there in front of our eyes.”
“Location is everything. If you put yourself in the right place with the right people, you will get amazing shots.”
Photographer Jef Harris brings his unique artistic style to the world of fashion photography. A music video producer, artist, as well as professional photographer, Jef’s portfolio is full of fresh and unpredictable imagery. Love the angles, use of light, and original compositions of Jef’s photography!
Here’s a brief bio…“. A 39 year old self taught artist of many many styles. I started out doing photography when I was young as well as painting watercolor. My first camera was a polariod instant camera. And my first drawing was of wolverine based on a drawing of Frank Miller. At 18 I got more deeply into the scene after seeing the band Skinny Puppy. After that is was all downhill. Over the last 7-10 years I’ve taken a more professional approach to my art, in painting and photography by incorporating my unique style and sticking to what I would like to see. I’m also deeply into the music scene, having made about a dozen low budget music videos, (you can see them all on my site), as well as a few movies. So among art I’ve thrown producing into the mix. And I must say, I’m having the time of my life. A short word about my work. As you maybe able to tell from my photos, when I work with a model who I get along with, I tend to stay with that model for long periods producing some of my best works. For they cease to be a model and become a partner.”
