I have always been preoccupied with the popularity of the two titans in the photographic equipment world. Both Canon and Nikon make tremendous photographic gear and are at the forefront of all major photographic innovations. I have owned both Canon and Nikon camera systems; outfitted with either dedicated Canon and Nikkor optics and loved them both. Not sure why I cared which camera manufacturer was most popular, probably just wanted a little affirmation on my choice.
Before you click on the following link, can you guess which camera company is represented in red and blue? Google Trends: nikon, canon
What I find most fascinating about this camera search data is the consistency of which Canon dominates Nikon in search volume. Canon never shied away from going after the consumer market even as it tried to establish itself as a top professional camera as well. Nikon, on the otherhand, has never seemed to jump into the consumer market with both feet. Yes, Nikon does have a wide variety of offerings today, more so than at any other time in their history (…still haven’t forgave them over the EM). But Canon is better at promotion and advertising, hands down. In either case, these trends were interesting.
