Laptop Users Beware

While researching photo blogs for our new upcoming feature, I came across a distributing post about the hazards of using a laptop. While laptop users are too familiar with the heat which can be generated from these devices, I have never seen any real evidence of this issue until now. On her blog, photographer Jessica Hughes shows some images of the physical damage she’s endured after her laptop caught fire, giving her third degree burns on her thigh. Warning – these images are pretty graphic! Ouch.

Besides using a desktop, I also make big use of two older model Dell laptops. Both units generate a lot of heat, enough to bubble up the service of my cheap computer desktop. I do perform preventive maintenance by regularly vacuuming out dust particles from the fan area, but I rarely shut them down…until now.

Jessica shares some words of wisdom from her experience, which I have heeded….

“I want you all to be CARFEUL! Don’t leave your computers on when you go to bed or leave your home. This is a serious wake up call for me. I am so glad that it was me that burned and not my kids or my house. Please learn from this!”

Jessica, I hear you loud and clear! Last night was the first night I cut off my laptops for the evening. Previously, I had never given it a thought. Sorry for your pain, but hopefully your message will spread an awareness about the fire potential associated with these devices.

I had recently purchased a portable laptop stand for my daughter, just because she wanted one. However, today I selected the one below ($32.00) for myself. It’s functional, affordable, and cheap insurance against the potential of what just happened to Jessica. Thanks for the warning Jessica, and I hope you have a speedy and full recovery.
