Alan Horsager is a Los Angeles based photographer. He began taking his photography seriously in the mid 1990’s and has shot across a broad range of styles including fashion photography (IMG Models), editorial (Resonance Magazine and Detour), and stock photography (Getty Images). 

His more recent work is both artistic and personal, combining street photography and travel styles that merge into a painterly approach.  On the technical side, he has used film and digital mediums; large, medium, and 35mm camera systems; and has created his own, homemade lenses for creative control over the images.  These manipulations are inspired by an interest in understanding how we see the world and how subtle abstractions can have dramatic impact on how we view a two-dimensional image. 

His work as a neuroscientist at the University of Southern California focuses on the study of visual sensation and perception, including the development of sight-restoring therapies.

“There are some buzz words in the world of wedding photography right now, photojournalistic is the main one. Most of my day is spent shooting candid photographs, I have a strong background in photojournalism as I have previous experience as a newspaper shooter, I would not describe myself as a true photojournalistic wedding photographer.

A true wedding photojournalist take on the day is that it should be documented as it naturally unfolds and there is very little emphasis on the portraits. I agree with this philosophy in that I do not intervene much as the day progresses, but the portraits are very important to me.

My favorite portraits do not consist of the bride and groom simply looking at the camera and smiling, rather I guide my couples into poses and scenes, often with lighting for dramatic effect. I prefer a candid look to my portraits, but I know what it takes to get those images, and they often do not happen naturally.”
