More than 40 years since her death, Marilyn Monroe continues to make headlines. This morning I found a photo blog featuring Marilyn photos shot by Douglas Kirkland. The photos were featured in a 2005 book, an Evening with Marilyn. What makes this photo series interesting are the quotes from the Kirkland himself, as he struggles to maintain his “focus”, while in the presence of one of Hollywood’s most beautiful actress. To compound the anxiety of the young photographer, during the shoot Marilyn excuses everyone for the evening, leaving only Kirkland and Monroe together. Since the book is a few years old, it can be picked up for a bargain….seems like a good read. Here’s a quote from Kirkland…
“What did come from those powerful feelings that evening were the pictures. I wonder if I had gotten into that bed with her then, if the pictures would have been as good. I’d say probably not.”“Looking back I realize that although I was with Marilyn Monroe on only three occastions during a short period in November of 1961, I never felt as though I was with the same individual more than once.”
