Detroit based photographer | Cybelle Codish “Cybelle is a photographer with an instinctive eye and a penchant for experimentation. She captures the drifting, invisible music with the static props of hands locked around guitar necks and microphone stands. She becomes engrossed in her subject matter, capitalizing on negative space to bring out the inherent positives.”

“Detroit bred Cybelle grew up in an artistic environment surrounded by musicians of every genre. Ensuring that she developed her own creativity, her parents sent her to art schools where she received extensive training in photography and music throughout her youth. She went on to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she spent the next four years honing her skills and testing the confines of traditional photography.”

“Upon returning to Detroit, she earned her livelihood photographing local musicians. As her reputation grew, she went on to create her own company “Negative Space Photography”. In 2005, she expanded to include graphic design and additional photographers, establishing two studios in Detroit under the new company name “Studio [c]“.”

IPhoneography | Seb’s Daily iPhone Photo Blog

IPhoneography has stamped its place on the photography landscape…in a nutshell, mobile photography with connectivity. Although iPhone photography has garnered plenty of attention lately, look for a growing number of camera manufacturers to incorporate Internet connectivity into their newer offerings. Bundled photo editing software packages built into point and shoot cameras with instant sharing capabilities will be the norm, rather than the exception, in the not so distant future.

All Walks of Life photo blog| John J. Waterfield.Greetings. My name is John. I recently started a photoblog to capture the main thing I do in my life everyday, which is meet people. I have always had a strong interest in individuals, from all walks of life (hence the title of my blog), and in the past few years, I have spent a great deal of time meeting people, out on the streets, during my travels, and daily adventures, and have accumulated best friends, travel buddies, and a wealth of funny or interesting stories.

I have loved photography for a long time, and so recently I decided I would combine these two passions, photography, and my love for people, and share it with the world. I shoot with a 5d mark ii. I own only 2 lenses, a 35mm prime and a 135mm prime. That’s all I need, I use only available light. Typically I will have a long conversation with someone before or after I shoot them, so I can decide how best to present that person on my blog. Anyhow, I’m new to the whole blogging thing and currently Im just seeking ways to get more people to see it.

“Photography became a passion for me while I was studying Architecture. At the time, I was using a 35mm point and shoot film camera, to document project sites for my design class. The idea was that once you had enough shots, you’d waste the rest of the roll in order to get the images developed immediately (1 hour was immediate). As time went on it would take me longer and longer to “waste” the rest of the roll. I found myself composing shots and taking chances for fun, because well, these was no reason not to. It beat the hell out of pointing the camera at the ground and firing off 10 or 12 shots.”

“I was able to use a free elective in my courses to take a beginner photography class. This allowed me to learn more about photography, but more importantly, gave me an excuse to use my parent’s credit card to buy my first SLR. The photography class was structured around Architecture (go figure) with a smattering of studio work. I, however, could give a shit about shooting buildings, let’s face it, inmost cases it wasn’t like the building was going anywhere. So, I spent most of my time shooting people walking around in front of the buildings. Fortunately, my photographer professor was cool with my approach and he gave me enough rope to hang myself. He showed me work by people like Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, HCB, etc. I was hooked.”

“I live in Philadelphia, but will be most likely moving to the ‘burbs within the year, so this is my last chance to take advantage of my urban environment. Most of the streets will be of the street photography variety, but I’m sure a couple of my son and future son/daughter will no doubt find their way in at some point.

“Hello. My blog is focused around street photography in NYC. I started the blog as a reason to get me off my arse and take pictures and help me improve my photography. I shoot both film and digital but i have been doing a lot of bw film work lately. The blog is mostly for me but it wouldn’t hurt if more people got to see my work right? Thanks.”

8th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest

Great photography contest from Smithsonian Magazine

Our eighth photo contest brings a new opportunity for Smithsonian to see the world through your unique lens. After seven competitions, our editors have seen over 140,000 photographs from more than 90 countries around the world. What makes a photograph a Smithsonian winner? Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but so too is a flair for the unexpected and the ability to capture a picture-perfect moment.

Enter the contest

Contestants can enter photographs in five categories—Altered Images, Americana, The Natural World, People and Travel—that represent subjects of special interest to the magazine. Fifty finalists will be selected, ten for each of the five categories. Smithsonian will notify the 50 finalists by February 28, 2011. From these 50 finalists, five category winners and a grand prize winner will be selected. The entries of all winners and finalists will be published on the magazine’s Web site on March 1, 2011. At that time, readers can vote online for one readers’ choice winner. The winning entries will be published in the print edition of Smithsonian magazine during summer 2011.

Category winners will be awarded $500. The readers’ choice winner will be awarded $500. The grand prize winner will receive a Smithsonian Journeys Grand Canyon Weekend Adventure for two, or the wholesale cash equivalent.

On a weekly basis beginning April 4, Smithsonian judges will post the best of the incoming entries in the Editors’ Picks portion of our Web site.
