…in my camera bag

While doing a little research this morning about professional photographers and wanting to know more about the photographic gear they carry, I did a simple search on the phrase “in my camera bag”. The results were quite interesting. I am a photographer and writer, but also an admitted photo gear geek…Here are a few links I was able to mine from the search results….Feel free to tell us what you carry in your camera bag!

Snapping Point is the London based photoblog of Danny Horner. Featured on the site is a sample of the photographs he has taken since the summer of 2000, which is roughly the time he started thinking about photography as something more than just an aide-memoire. He shot on film until 2005 when he abandoned ship in favour of the ease of digital; and hasn’t really been back since.”

“He’s guessing that probably much less than 1% of the photographs he has taken, and continues to take, will make it on here. Those that do will be drip fed onto the site with no mind for chronology, so that recent photos will, sometimes, sit next to ones several years old.”

“Although he would describe himself, if you asked, as nothing more than a hobbyist he was paid real money to do the photography for this music video.

“Some vaguely technical information for those interested, Danny has owned and used, in roughly this order: an Olympus OM-10, a Lomo LC-A, a Sigma SA-7, several one-use disposables, a Polaroid SX-70, a Canon G6 and a Nikon D40. With all the images appearing here, whether film or digital, optimization and general tinkering has been done, if at all, with Photoshop Elements 6.”

“Danny Horner was born in 1974 and grew up in a home counties village. He moved to a city as soon as he was old enough to know how, and has spent all but the first few months of the 21st century residing in London, where he attempts to reconcile a thirst for creative perfection with a chronic and debilitating laziness.”

Adventures of a GoodMan – World Travel  and Photography - “…fun tales of what happens when you take a New Yorker completely out of his element and thrust him into the backpacker scene.”

*     *     *

“Life is fun and the world is huge! To remind myself of this, every so often pack a backpack and head out on an adventure of some sort. Sometimes I find myself stuck on a motorcycle in shin-deep mud, face to face with the Thai army, chasing a naked burglar through the River Kwai at 3am or lost and alone in the mountains of Nicaragua on a disobedient horse with only my minimal Spanish, the equivalent of 30 cents and a stick of chapstick.”

“Other times I’m meeting amazing new people, seeing the most breathtaking sights in the world, eating every bit of local cuisine I can find, traveling like a local and stopping to volunteer along the way. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, my camera is snapping away and the blog entry is sure to follow.”

“Above all else, Adventures of a GoodMan is meant to be a cross-cultural learning experience. All of the photos are carefully labeled to share not only the image but interesting background information as well: just click on any pic to learn more.”

Top 10 Point Shoot Cameras for 2010

camera banner Top 10 Point Shoot Cameras for 2010 pictures
Whether you prefer your camera to go unnoticeable or choose to travel light, a camera’s size and weight are an important decision for any photographer. The new point and shoot cameras we are showcasing offer superb picture quality, outstanding responsiveness, and produce stunning images comparable to many DSLRs on the market today. Our top 10 point shoot cameras for 2010 offer a wide range of features from high megapixel counts, excellent image resolution, and affordable prices. If camera styling is important to you, most of these camera models come in a variety of colors as well.

Personally, I went to a point and shoot a couple of years ago for all my street and travel photography. While I would never part with my DSLR, here are 3 great reasons to consider adding one of these compact cameras to your photo bag…(Also check Amazon’s Best Selling Point and Shoot Cameras, updated every hour!)

  • Ease of use – Street photography can be an awkward endeavor, even for the most seasoned professional. Being able take “grab shots” with one hand, or capture images quickly made me a convert to these compact wonders.
  • Affordability – While you can spend quite a sum of money on one, most point and shoot cameras can be had for well less than $500….some of the most popular models range from $200-$300. At these prices, I am not overly concerned with damaging them. I can’t tell you how many great images I missed while traveling without my DSLR for this very reason.
  • Picture Quality – Point and Shoot cameras now offer maximum resolution exceeding 12 megapixels. I rarely shoot at maximum resolution, but it’s nice to know it’s there if needed. It doesn’t seem that long ago when the company I worked for “went digital” and purchased several Kodak DCS 420′s , at a price tag over $10k for a 1.5 megapixel camera!
